Conflict in the workplace is a common occurrence.  The presentation of different ideas and opinions can cause disagreements that may escalate out of control, damage relationships, and destroy trust.  However, effectively managed conflicts can lead to better understandings, encourage an appreciation of diverse points of view, and improve problem solving and decision making processes.  To handle conflict constructively, conflict competence is needed at all levels of management.  The Fairfax County Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution provides multiple services to address conflict in the workplace before, during, and when it happens, which empowers all employees to become conflict competent.

Come prepared to discuss the following:

    - What does conflict competence mean?

    - What are conflict competencies?

    - What happens when conflicts are poorly managed? - What determines if conflict can be managed well?

    - What do/can you do as an HR professional to address conflict successfully?

    - What can you do when conflicts get out of hand?

    - What programs can be created by HR professionals to increase conflict competence?

Our facilitator for this discussion is Christiane Eichmann, the Fairfax County ADR Program Coordinator.
