From Resenteeism to Presenteeism: Dealing with Rising Tide of Quiet Quitting

Quiet quitting, although seemingly a new cultural phenomenon and HR jargon, is the new name for an old behavior. Employees have been checking out of work ever since work became a thing; however, the reasons have been myriad and different in different eras. In the last year or so, the term has made a comeback because of COVID-related stress and the inability to recognize the signs of quiet quitting when many employees are working from home and in their own bubble.

In the well-being arena, folks have been quiet quitting due to burnout and work-life balance. In the team-building arena, folks have been quiet quitting due to non-engagement and resentment. In the DEI arena, folks have been quiet quitting due to marginalization and not being heard.

This session will take a deep dive into quiet quitting, its causes, symptoms, and how to resolve it among employees. Addressing issues of withdrawal, resentment, and low levels of engagement will help HR personnel learn about the nuances of human psychology in a post-COVID world, intricacies of generational and age differences, relevance of improving organizational culture, and adoption of strong DEI practices. Consequently, this would help turn a negative, unproductive, “anything goes” kind of work attitude into showing up, going above and beyond, and being fully present and engaged in the workplace. In this session, attendees will learn:

    1. Learn about quiet quitting and its forms/types.
    2. Examine its causes and symptoms.
    3. Discuss ways to prevent and address it.
